Consultation opens for $2 billion green aluminium production credit

Consultation has opened today for the design of the Albanese Labor Government’s $2 billion Green Aluminium Production Credit. The record $2 billion investment in the Australian-made aluminium industry is backing Australian industry and Australian jobs.

The Credit will provide local smelters with the confidence to invest as they move to using renewable electricity.

By backing Australian-made facilities, Australia secures a lasting competitive edge in the global clean energy economy.

Used across construction, defence, transport and electronics, as well as in clean energy infrastructure like solar panels, wind turbines, and transmission lines, aluminium is central to both Australia’s industrial strength and the clean energy transition.

Aluminium is essential for a Future Made in Australia because of its strategic importance – and Australia has the skills, facilities and best wind and solar resources to strengthen our position as the sixth largest producer of aluminium in the world.

There is significant global demand for aluminium, and this important incentive will help Australia, and our trading partners reduce their emissions. The production of aluminium contributes 3-4 per cent of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions, so cutting these facilities’ emissions will support the Government’s 2035 emissions reduction targets.

Facilities will be eligible for support for every tonne of clean, reliable, Australian-made aluminium they make over a period of up to 10 years or to 2044, whichever is sooner.

Consultation on the design of the production credit opened today and will close on 30 October 2025.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres:

“Australia’s aluminium smelters have long been the backbone of our manufacturing sector.

“Demand for aluminium, because of its wide range of uses including for the infrastructure necessary for the energy transition – both at home and with our trading partners – is set to grow strongly in the decades ahead.

“But this energy intensive industry is currently responsible for 3-4 per cent of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“With the right stable policy settings and incentives, abundant renewable energy and rich mineral resources, Australia has what it takes to lead the world in aluminium production made using renewable energy.

“Aluminium using renewable energy, alongside other metals, is a priority sector under the Future Made in Australia agenda, and decarbonising our aluminium smelters is essential to achieving our net zero targets.”
