Nominations open for 2027 Prime Minister's Prizes for Science

Joint media release with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Nominations are now open for the 2027 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, Australia’s most prestigious awards celebrating our outstanding scientists, innovators and science teachers.

The Prizes recognise Australians pushing the boundaries of knowledge, turning great ideas into impact, drawing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems, and inspiring the next generation to pursue science and STEM careers.

Each year, the Prizes put a national spotlight on exceptional individuals whose work is helping to solve real-world challenges, strengthen communities and shape Australia’s future.

The 2027 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science will celebrate contributions across three categories:

  • Science Prizes – five awards recognising achievement across a range of career stages and disciplines in science and innovation.
  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge Systems Prize – recognising achievements in the practice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems.
  • Science Teaching Prizes – recognising primary and secondary school teachers who inspire curiosity, nurture talent and encourage students to explore future pathways in STEM.

The Government encourages nominations that reflect the full breadth and diversity of the Australian community, including women and others whose contributions have historically been underrepresented.

A nomination is a powerful endorsement of an individual’s work and impact, recognising what they have achieved and encouraging them to keep pushing boundaries.

Recipients receive national recognition and prize money ranging from $50,000 to $250,000, and join a distinguished group of Australians whose work continues to inspire future generations.

Nominations close at 5:00pm AEDT on Thursday, 7 January 2027.

Quotes attributable to the Hon Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister:

“Science not only helps drive humanity forward but also inspires us and shows us what is possible when we put our brightest minds to our toughest challenges.

“Past recipients have reflected the best of our nation – our intelligence, work ethic and incredible diversity, and this is an opportunity to highlight more great work.

“If you know a scientist, innovator or teacher doing great things, then I urge you to consider nominating them.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres:

"The Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science recognise the best and brightest minds helping to shape Australia’s future – from groundbreaking discoveries to exceptional science teaching.

"When we celebrate great scientists and great teachers, we make their achievements visible to the next generation. That matters because the scientists, researchers and innovators Australia will need tomorrow are sitting in classrooms around the country today.”

"We want the prizes to reflect the full diversity of the Australian community – so if you know someone setting the benchmark for excellence, I encourage you to put their name forward for a Prime Minister’s Prize."
