Australian Made Week launch

Melbourne
E&OE

Who knew if you organise an event at the MCG on a Monday, you get quite a crowd. It’s wonderful to see all of you here. It's a real pleasure. I wanted to thank Andy Lee for not just coming here today and being part of a campaign, but backing Australia in the way that you have over, what I think, has been an important boost to this campaign.

The MCG is in the heart of Sarah Witty's seat. We still think of her as the new Member for Melbourne and it's good to see Sarah here. Jo Briskey the Member for Maribyrnong, Andrew Giles the Member for Scullin, and our fantastic Assistant Treasurer, Daniel Mulino here as well. And I particularly, while I'm acknowledging people here, want to thank the business leaders and their staff from Abel, from Capral and from ARC. If you talk to their staff and talk to them about the work that they do. Every day making things here in Australia, and the pride that they feel in that contribution to Australia's economy, for their families and their communities, and also for our security. Nothing like – nothing more than – aluminium symbolises that opportunity for Australia and the strategic importance of that.

So, these goal posts behind me are made from bauxite mined in Australia, probably in Far North Queensland, processed at the Boyne Aluminium Smelter or the Tomago Aluminium Smelter. Turned into aluminium products by firms like Capral Aluminium – our great Australian aluminium producer that makes door frames and window frames and all sorts of aluminium products, and then, from the Abel team, turned into goal posts.

But they're also turned into navy ships, food packaging. Things that are essential for Australia's economic resilience. We have one of the few, in fact, I think the only, end-to-end aluminium supply chains in the world.

That is a great asset for Australia's economy. The Queensland Government and the Albanese Government stepped in with a very significant package to support the Boyne Aluminium Smelter. $1 billion from the Albanese Government, $1 billion from the Crisafulli Government. We’re often criticised for these kind of pro-manufacturing packages. Well, this led to $7.5 billion from Rio Tinto invested in new electricity generation. Investment in industry in Central Queensland for as far as the eye can see. Good quality blue collar industrial regional jobs.

This Australian Made Week is the 40th anniversary since the Hawke Government established this – I had a cup of tea with Barry Jones this morning, who was on the scene as well – this is a Labor achievement. Australian Made Week, established by Bob Hawke in the 1980s, supported by Australian businesses and the Australian Made team.

Today 4,500 Australian businesses, tens of thousands of Australian workers are members of this scheme. And if you're a patriotic Australian, you believe in the country and you're in the supermarket or you're in the shopping centre – buy Australian. Look for the Australian Made logo because you're backing the country, you're backing high quality products and you're backing Australian jobs.

Last year the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, in response to the decision of the United States Government to embark upon a new round of tariffs, made the decision that part of our response would be an additional $20 million to support the Australian Made campaign and this Australian Made Week because we know that Australians want to back local manufacturers, they want to back Australian Made. They just need the occasional reminder. This week is a good opportunity to do that and there's no better ambassador to deliver that message than Andy Lee who's kicked a few goals for us this morning. So, thank you very much for all of your work.

Thank you very much to the workers from ARC and Capral and Abel. I'm really pleased to see that you're all here with us today. I put a big effort in overnight on the cake. The only thing that I can't claim credit for is the popcorn, the coloured popcorn, but otherwise that's a great Australian Made cake right there and I hope you eat it all.

Thank you very much.
