Celebrating National Science Week 2025

From sustainable farming on Earth and in space to learning about the flavours of the future, it’s all on the menu for National Science Week 2025.

Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres enthusiastically welcomes Australia’s annual national celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Now in its 29th year, National Science Week runs from 9-17 August with thousands of public and private, as well as virtual events, across the country.

From the city to the bush, your closest event could be at the local pub, primary school, community centre, park or beach.

National Science Week 2025 events include:

  • Grow 4 Launch (Vic, WA, SA and online): Participants will receive a microgreens kit and explore the
science needed to sustainably grow plants in the extreme conditions of space.
  • AI in Food (ACT): Experts from the Australian Academy of Science will discuss how farmers will use
AI to boost sustainability and profit.
  • Science behind saving lives at sea (NSW): Marine Rescue NSW will take participants on a journey
to discover the underlying scientific principles that make search and rescue operations possible
    around Port Macquarie.
  • Be a Top End biosecurity expert for the day (NT): School students will meet scientists on the
frontline protecting Australia from exotic pests and diseases.
  • Journey through the Wonders of the Cosmos (WA): The International Space Centre at UWA will
transport attendees from Earth all the way to the edge of the universe.
  • The Festival of Bright Ideas (Tas) and Gladstone Art Science Innovation Fest (Qld).

First held in 1997, National Science Week has become one of Australia’s largest science festivals, with around 3.2 million people participating in more than 2,000 registered events and activities last year.

The Albanese Labor Government is supporting National Science Week through both national and local grant rounds, as well as through the Inspiring Australia Network. These key initiatives are funded under the national Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Program (IA-SEP) to support science engagement events and activities across all states and territories.
