The Albanese government will further deepen Australia's regional scientific presence by opening the first round of grants for the $40m Global Science and Technology Diplomacy Fund (GSTDF) with a new focus on collaboration within the Asia-Pacific.

The announcement signals the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthen scientific collaboration with our nearest neighbours.

Australian researchers and businesses can now apply for a share of $6 million to partner with counterparts in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Brazil.  

Today’s announcement builds on the government’s $10.3m investment to establish an Asia-Pacific regional office of the International Science Council to coordinate scientific engagement across the region. 

GSTDF funding will boost global research efforts in areas of key national interest such as advanced manufacturing, AI, quantum computing, hydrogen production and RNA vaccines.

The Government is partnering with the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), and the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) to deliver the first grant round. 

The priority research areas were identified through extensive stakeholder engagement and align with Government’s strategies and priorities. They will be reviewed annually. 

Applications open on 20 March 2024 and close on 31 May 2024.
