Strategic research collaboration bolsters international science ties

The Australian Government is strengthening its science and technology partnerships with Japan and other regional neighbours through new investments under the Global Science and Technology Diplomacy Fund.

Nine collaborative international research projects will share in $6.2 million under Round 2 of the Fund’s Strategic Element, with individual grants ranging from $100,000 to $1 million.

Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Dr Andrew Charlton said six of the projects involve Japan as a key partner, underscoring the momentum and strategic importance of the Australia-Japan relationship.

Funding will support projects that harness AI, including its use in technology for ocean water quality forecasting, advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver precision cancer radiotherapy, and space exploration.

Today’s announcement coincides with the visit to Australia of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and reflects the shared commitment of both nations to deepening cooperation in priority technology areas and strengthening regional resilience.

Projects in this round also include collaboration with partners in Singapore, Vietnam, New Zealand, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea.

Funding is being delivered in partnership with the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and the Australian Academy of Science (AAS).
