Small businesses to get big help bulldozing red tape

18 June 2018

Joint media release with the NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Small Business, John Barilaro, and NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet.

Commonwealth Minister for Small Business Craig Laundy, Deputy Premier and Minister for Small Business John Barilaro and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet have announced a significant scaling up of the NSW Government’s award-winning Easy to do Business program, which provides small businesses with one front door to Government.

This will be delivered with $95.9 million from the Commonwealth Government’s Project Agreement for Small Business Regulatory Reform, which was signed by Commonwealth Treasurer Scott Morrison and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet.

Following the successful pilots of the Easy to do Business program, Commonwealth funding will accelerated and expanded so councils across New South Wales can continue helping cafes, restaurants and small bars get beyond the start-up phase.

The Easy to do Business Program will also now extend to the housing construction sector, helping get more builders in the game and more supply to market.

“The Turnbull Government is providing up to $300 million of funding over three years to encourage state and territory governments to deliver regulatory reforms that remove costs and complexity for business,” Mr Laundy said.

“This makes it easier for new businesses to get going and existing businesses grow, which ultimately drives innovation and creates new jobs.”

Mr Barilaro said the extra funding will allow the NSW Government to expand the award-winning Easy to do Business program which slashes the time it takes to open a business.

“The Easy to do Business pilots have slashed red tape by cutting the time, cost and complexity of starting up a cafe, restaurant or small bar.

“Instead of waiting up to 18 months and filling out up to 48 forms, an aspiring cafe, restaurant or small bar owner can expect to open in less than 90 days by using one online platform and with the help of a Service NSW Business Concierge.

“The NSW Government is committed to making this State the easiest place to start and run a small business by removing barriers, costs and complexity.

“The Commonwealth’s financial support will allow us to do more on all fronts to help our small businesses thrive.”

Mr Perrottet said this would help ensure NSW remains the best place to do business.

“This initiative is focused on ensuring we are providing the right conditions for our businesses to prosper and succeed.

“We welcome this game-changing partnership with the Commonwealth to help ensure our State remains the best place in Australia to do business.”
