Food for thought as plans unveiled for food and agribusiness sector

17 July 2017

The Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Craig Laundy, used a major industry conference in Sydney today to announce two significant initiatives designed to grow Australia’s food and agribusiness sector.

During his opening address at the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology’s (AIFST) 50th Anniversary Convention, Mr Laundy unveiled CSIRO’s Food and Agribusiness Roadmap and the Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre’s (FIAL) Sector Competitiveness Plan.

CSIRO’s Roadmap, charts a course for food products, technology and innovation to secure future success in the sector.

Developed with widespread industry consultation and analysis, the Roadmap aims to assist Australian food and agribusinesses to grow and pursue new markets.

CSIRO said Australia was well positioned to act as a “delicatessen” of high-quality products to meet the needs of billions of informed and discerning customers both here and abroad.

FIAL, the Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre funded by government, also used the convention to release the latest iteration of its Sector Competitiveness Plan. The plan outlines a ten-year vision and strategy for the industry; revised annually to reflect market forces shaping the sector.

“We are excited to present the latest version of our Sector Competitiveness Plan which focusses on a vision that the industry, by 2025, is working together to grow the share of Australian food in the global marketplace,” FIAL’s Chair, Peter Schutz, said.

Themed “The Future of Food”, the convention is focussed on the emerging science, technologies and innovations set to propel the Australian food industry forward.

During his address, Mr Laundy highlighted the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in driving new economic growth in the industry, citing the success of Australian businesses who unlocked value-adding growth opportunities.

“This convention is what innovation in the food industry is all about—bringing like-minded, entrepreneurial people together to explore the exciting frontiers of what can be achieved in one of Australia’s most competitive sectors.”
