Innovative mining projects share in $7 million

3 July 2018

Today the Turnbull Government announced project funding investment in drone technology designed by Western Australian business Emapper, to do the necessary environmental mapping required for any mine site, reducing safety risks to workers.

It is just one of eight new and innovative projects to be awarded a share of over $7 million Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) Growth Centre Ignited Project Fund.

On the wall of the Emapper headquarters in Perth is a venomous snake identification poster for the Pilbara.

The drone technology is designed to reduce the need for workers to be out in the extreme weather conductions or among the 27 species of venomous snakes and other predators found in the Pilbara.

The METS Growth Centre works with businesses like Emapper to strengthen Australia’s position as a global hub for mining innovation, encouraging excellence in mining through industry and research partnerships.

In this round of funding, the second provided through the METS Ignited Project Fund, the $7 million investment by the Turnbull Government has been matched by industry, for a total investment of almost $17 million.

Minister for Jobs and Innovation Michaelia Cash said the successful projects reflected the important role of collaboration and improved competitiveness of the nation’s METS industry.

“The METS Industry Growth Centre is about industry setting its own plan for growing itself. The Government is providing connections and funding, matched by industry, to make these plans a reality,” Minister Cash said.

“The Turnbull Government, alongside industry, is investing in cutting edge technology, and demonstrating that METS businesses are striving for excellence and creating more jobs for Australians.

“Australia’s METS sector is an $86 billion dollar industry that employs around 300,000 people. It creates jobs, builds skills, and brings commercial rewards as well as higher wages for Australian workers.”
