Office of Northern Australia open for business

18 December 2015

Today I am pleased to announce the launch of the new Office of Northern Australia (ONA) headquarters in Darwin.

The ONA will be located in Development House on the Esplanade, and will be fully operational from 18 January next year.

A new ONA website has also been launched, to provide a one stop shop for stakeholders and investors with an interest in the development of northern Australia.

The opening of the ONA office in Darwin delivers on the Government’s commitment to relocate the ONA from Canberra to northern Australia.

Northern Australia contributes over 11 per cent of Australia’s GDP, makes up 40 per cent of our land mass, and has huge potential to further contribute to the economic prosperity of our nation.

In June, the Government released the White Paper, Our North, Our Future, which sets out a plan to unlock the vast economic potential of the region.

The ONA will assist the Government in the implementation of the initiatives in the White Paper by placing key officials and administrative functions directly in the north.

The White Paper includes over $1.2 billion in investment commitments, spread across 50 policy initiatives and 15 Commonwealth agencies. The ONA will be instrumental in coordinating these initiatives and will liaise directly with government and stakeholders to ensure the correct policy settings are put in place to implement these measures and identify future initiatives.

Further, the ONA will play a central key role in the implementation of the Government’s $5 billion Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), working closely with northern stakeholders and colleagues in the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.  The NAIF will provide concessional loans to major economic infrastructure to support the development of Australia’s north.

As part of the launch of the ONA, I also welcome the recent appointment of its new head, Mark Coffey. Mr Coffey has significant public sector experience, having recently been Regional Manager for Central Australia in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He will play a significant role in helping the Government to deliver its northern Australia strategy.

More information about the Office of Northern Australia is available at the new dedicated ONA website, available here: www.northernaustralia.gov.au
